Snow to water ratio

Ever wonder how much rain or water forms an inch of snow? When the snow melts, and streets and basements flood and ice dams allow back-flow of water into your home, you may be asking yourself just that. Depending on the density of the snow it can range from 10-15” equals 1” of water. The simplest way to remember this is that 1 foot of snow equals 1 inch of water. Density is dependent on the outside temperature. Typically the warmer the weather the lighter the snowflakes and the less moisture they contain. The ratio is not one fixed rate however weather forecasters and similar occupations use this as a baseline estimation.

So as all this snow, that southeastern Massachusetts has recently experienced, melts we advise all of our friends and neighbors to keep a keen eye on your roofs and basements. The frozen ground easily becomes overwhelmed with massive amount of snow we still have and if temperatures continue to rise steadily we will see influx of water with nowhere to go flooding homes and businesses.
